C1Hydraulic cylinder repair: how it works

A hydraulic cylinder usually fails gradually: it starts to leak, the load drifts down on its own, it loses force. A cylinder like this can usually be rebuilt instead of buying a new one. Here is how we repair cylinders at the Hidrorema workshop in Panevėžys.

When to get in touch

  • Oil leaks at the piston rod or the gland
  • The boom, bucket or load drifts down on its own
  • The cylinder moves more slowly, jerks or loses force
  • The piston rod is scored, corroded or bent
  • Worn mounting eyes or bushings

How the repair works

  1. Intake and inspection

We inspect the cylinder and find out how it failed and what machine it works on. If you can, bring in only the cylinder, not the whole machine.

  2. Dismantling and cleaning

We dismantle the cylinder and clean the parts so that all damage is visible.

  3. Measuring and fault assessment

We inspect and measure the piston rod, barrel, piston and gland, looking for scoring, wear and bending. We decide what can stay, what needs restoring and what has to be made new.

  4. Barrel honing

If the inner surface of the barrel is damaged or worn, we hone it so the new seals seal tightly again.

  5. Making new parts

We make a new piston rod, barrel or other damaged part in our own workshop. We turn parts up to 4.5 m long and 380 mm in diameter.

  6. Seal replacement

We replace the seals and, if needed, the bushings, selecting them to suit the cylinder's dimensions.

  7. Assembly and pressure testing

We pressure test the assembled cylinder and make sure it is leak-free and working before we return it to you.

Why repair instead of buying a new cylinder

A repair replaces only the worn parts, so it usually costs far less than a new cylinder. The rebuilt cylinder is the same one that was on your machine, so there is no need to adapt mounts or connections.

New cylinders for older machines are often no longer made, or you have to wait weeks for them. In that case we make the part you need from the old sample.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cylinder with a scored piston rod be repaired?

Yes. If the piston rod is damaged, we make a new one from the old rod. We do the same with barrels and other parts.

Do I need to bring the whole machine?

Not always. If you can, remove and bring in only the cylinder. Not sure how to do it? Call +370 686 94743 and we'll advise.

Do you test the cylinder after repair?

Yes. We pressure test every assembled cylinder before returning it to the customer.
